If you go to any library
you´ll find thousands of books for modern women, for the ones that work, or
study, or are mothers, wives or professionals. many of these books, are not
useful to guide a christian woman.
So why not going to the bible? In this
sacred book you´ll find inspiring stories of women that, lived long ago before
us, are not so different from women nowadays. Through wise attitudes, they can
teach us how to deal with job and marriage and mainly, how to listen to God´s
voice and how to have a lifestyle acording to God´will. That´s why, we started
talking about the women of the bible.
Due to the fact that many
women nowadays have a profession or work, our first example is Deborah, who was
the only woman in the Bible that became a judge of Israel.
She is an example of woman
independence in a society where women wouldn´t stand up in professional life.
With wisdom, she wrote her name in biblical history when she became a judge,
without leaving aside the love for her family and humility.
In the book of Judges,
chapter 4, begins the story of this courageous and strong woman. "She
held courtunder the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the
hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to have their
disputes decided."
We don´t know where she came
from. All that the Bible says is that, unhappy to see her people falling into
the hands of their enemies, she stood up to fight for them.
Judges 5:7: "Villagers
in Israel would not fight; they held back until I,
Deborah, arose, until I arose, a mother in Israel."
Her story before becoming a
judge, is not known, but she won people´s respect, she feared God and proceeded
with wisdom and love.
She was married to a man
maned Lappidoth. The Bible doesn´t say much, but she probably must have had
children.
Another thing about her is
that she was confident. You can see that when Barak, in charge of the
army, said to her, “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me,
I won’t go.” Judges 4.8.
She had the power in her
hands, she was a leader, but wasn´t pride or thought that she was more
important that others. The Bible shows us that she was humble because she
wouldn´t let the power she had take away her sweetness.
Judges 5.9: "My heart is
with Israel’s princes, with the willing volunteers among the
people."
What else can we learn from
her?
She knew how to find a link
between professional and personal life. She never let freedom or independence
perjudice her essence as a woman full of love, humility and gentle.
Without her support, Barak
wouldn´t have gone to fight; he showed that without her words of encouragement
and wisdom, they wouldn´t have had victory in any aspect of their lives.
Deborah stook up and
put herself at God´s disposition and she was used by Him to set His people
free.
In the end she
said: “But may all who love you be like the sun when it rises in its
strength.” Judges 5.3
Who loves God above
everything and asks for His guidance, shines in every aspect of his/her life.
